The LA Bassist EVERYONE’S talking about
A few months back, we got into the argument that all bass players get into - what are the coolest, grooviest bass lines of all time? After hours of heated debate, we decided to get LA bassist Nick Campbell to help make that decision for us.
In today’s video, Nick Campbell reels off the bass lines that shaped his sound. It’s the perfect way to introduce yourself to the worlds of Rocco Prestia, Ray Brown, James Jamerson and Colin Greenwood.
In this episode:
Why Nick is a huge Radiohead fan.
The first time he heard Tower of Power.
Why nothing beats a Ray Brown two-feel.
Is this James Jamerson’s coolest bass line?
And much, much more!

Please make a video about slapping on 4 strings vs 5 and 6 string bass. I see marcus miller uses a thumb on his fretting hand to mute strings? does string spacing come into play. i have to seen any on the internet.
Why not just do a pull off from the f to get to the d?
wes borland is highly respected…
Awesome Lesson and cool bass! What kind of bass is that by the way? Thanks Joshua
My grandfather told me, "Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one, and they usually stink. Best to keep it to yourself."
Not a bass player but absolutely love that rift at the start of sweet child
Disagree with Scott
Warwick do a shortscale Corvette active bass.
Bakithi's phrasing and timing is astonishing. Such an incredible and original player
So cool! I always assumed there was a chorus effect on the track.
Great work guys!!!
I don't think I have ever NOT played Rotten Apple by Alice in chains every time I pick up a bass.
Ok, so I'm going to need a semi acoustic short scale with flat wounds.
You should have waited 2 days to release this video lol
I love you ! Embarrassing 😂
Sounds like heavy compression.
Jack's great. Especially in later years when he played nearly everything fretless
Just when I think the MTD is the way to go you drop this with the Lull and F bass candy in front of my eyes! Lull sounds great but that F bass slapped… one tone to rule them all
Hello! what is this grey bass (shortscale) that you have in your hands at the beginning? look amazing
I would absolutely love to afford a bass and decent amplifier
That's crazy! All these years I thought he was using an analog chorus but he just played it twice!
They played it in reverse. Surprise surprise suprise
A critique did his/her job while the fans n listeners do what they do… So…
i had to do a double-take because nicko's feet at 1:21 looked like he's hanging dong
Seems very hard to get the timing of the start of the loper exactly right...
David Gilmour’s Strat went for 5.7M. I would absolutely agree Paul’s bass would go for 10M+.
title this song ?
Oh wow the unison on the bass line sounded awesome
This bass line…and then Seinfeld. Top bass lines.
300 dollars I wish I could find a stingray for that now you can't get a sub for even close to that today
Ahhh when I had plenty of hair and women and stuff was simple and music was fing awesome
I picked up the bass because of this album! Also, if the second part is reversed, the tab doesn't quite match (IMHO)
My childhood 🎉
As a resident of SLO, where Music Man is a 20 minute walk from my doorstep, I have to say that there is nothing quite like THAT sound. I've been saying it for decades. Oddly, for living in the town where all the great Music Man instruments are born, they do not have a strong presence here (isn't that a shame?). No public showroom, no storefront in the city -- in fact you have to drive 15 minutes south of the factory to even find a music store (one of the greatest guitar/bass shops in the world I might add -- Lightning Joe's) to even play a few that are hot out of the oven. All this and I have yet to own one. Isn't that sad? But I likely will soon. We shall see! Many years ago I ran into Joe Dart up here. He crashed an open mic at a bar called The Frog and Peach. I didn't even know who he was but I saw he had a new bass with a roasted neck (new at the time) so I asked him if I could see and play it. Graciously he let me. How he doesn't need neck surgery is beyond me.
Sorry guys but your transcription of deeper underground is wrong. What is played in the original track is actually. Db Ab(short) Db A D D etc... The end of the riff is looped with Db Cb(B) Db (so this time it s a whole step lower like you played all along the riff but for the rest it s a fourth lower than the target. It s sounds Deeper like this (😅didn t mean it). Everybody plays it like like you and the note is short enough and diatonic so it s sounds good.. But a fourth lower sounds better. Thank you for your channel and the good time you provide to us bassists all over the world. I often use your drums sequences to work and it sounds awesome and it s a great tool for any bass player. Best regards
You can do this really easily on a Headrush pedalboard with the Time Warp model hooked up to the expression pedal.
I love the new F Bass you got there Scott. It is very different looking without the matching pickup covers.
That’s insane 🤯🤯
Sounds better without the loop.
She stays in "BEASTMODE"!
It is because we all know what it is without watching the video
Fun bass line, and always cool to see a fellow Kiesel player 😁
🤡🤡
Me with my Fender copy: hmm, my bass sounds a little better than that one, even when I play it lol
Blur- Song 2 The chorus sounds like a car being crushed to a drum beat.
Me too
Bakithi is the reason I'm a bass player. I was 6 when this album came out and the tape was in the car nearly all the time. The sounds I heard were like nothing I'd ever heard before and the way each musician approached their instruments, they sounded like instruments I'd never heard before. Everything to me sounded like it was coming from a whole new dimension, the only thing that sounded familiar was Paul, like he was introducing us all to this sound. Particularly the bass sounded like something I didn't know but I loved it. It's funny, "You Can Call Me Al" is not my favorite song now but at the time, I couldn't wait to hear it and that part he played was the highlight of it all. The first time I saw Bakithi was on TV not long after the album came out and I saw him do that little solo I loved so much. From then on, I knew what I wanted to be. I wanted to be just like Bakithi, he was the coolest person I'd ever seen. I've been playing bass for 30 years. I've been in many groups, been on tour a few times, been in front of thousands for a few major artists, opened up for others but no matter what I do, if I have a room a bass and an amp, that's all I need to be happy, to re-center myself. I don't need to play for anyone but me. That's the gift of music. So Bakithi, if you read this, Thank you and you are my #1, always and forever.
Wow ur old. I wasn't even born tillers later
Not a virtuoso, but an iconic bass player.
Awesome video!
I have a love/hate relationship with my Stingray 5 which I've owned for 30 years. Sometimes it's perfect and other times it just doesn't fit the bill at all - unlike a P bass which is way more versatile IMHO.
